Key Benefits & Mechanism

  • Targeted Action: Unlike traditional sedatives, imepitoin targets specific GABA receptors in the brain to lower excessive electrical activity and prevent seizures.
  • Fast-Acting: It begins working within a few hours and reaches a steady state in the dog's body after just 2 days.
  • High Safety Profile: It does not cause drug dependency, does not change the dog's drug tolerance over time, and does not elevate liver enzymes.
  • No Routine Blood Monitoring: Unlike phenobarbital, it generally does not require regular serum drug level monitoring.

Administration

  • Food Compatibility: Pexion can be safely administered with or without food.

Potential Side Effects

Side effects are generally mild, temporary, and usually occur at the start of the treatment before resolving on their own:

  • Temporary drowsiness or mild sedation
  • Brief loss of coordination (ataxia)
  • Slightly increased hunger or thirst
  • Mild digestive changes

Critical Usage Warnings

  • Prescription Required: You must get a valid script from your vet to purchase this medication.
  • Not for Cluster Seizures: Pexion is not tested or intended as a primary treatment for status epilepticus or severe cluster seizures (multiple fits within 24 hours).
  • Organ Contraindications: Do not give Pexion to dogs suffering from severe liver, kidney, or heart issues.
  • Do Not Stop Abruptly: Suddenly halting treatment can cause a relapse of seizures or brief behavioral rebound signs. Always taper under veterinary guidance.
